For Alexis

Paul and Silas sit in prison.
Silas shifts a little, shakes his chain.
Paul shifts and shakes in response.
Shake, rattle, and roll.

"Hmmm! says Silas, eye-a-twinkle.
"Hymn?" says Paul, and then the two
chain out a beat, singing a psalm of old.

Next day Paul puts pen to papyrus,
To write the Philippians’ church
“Count all your sufferings joy.”
